Many bereaved parents have been told something like ‘most marriages fall apart after the loss of a child’. Some have even been faced with percentages up to 70, 80 or even as high as 90%.
Let me tell you: It’s a myth! It’s not true!
In fact, a study conducted by the Compassionate Friends in 1999 revealed the following:
“This survey (found quoted in an article dated 2006 – ok, I agree, not very recent…) and the 1999 TCF survey, which showed a divorce rate among bereaved parents of only 12%, suggests that the 70%, 80%, and 90% divorce rates often quoted as fact by professionals and in the media are completely inaccurate. The figures indicate that the death of a child actually appears to draw bereaved parents together as they travel life’s grief journey.”
REMEMBER: Just because someone in authority said something, it does not necessarily have to be correct.
